Endometriosis: treatment, pregnancy planning

9 September 2021

Endometriosis is a common gynecological disease. With its development, the cells of the endometrium (the layer lining the uterus from the inside) grow outside of it. Such pathology can occur not only in the parts of the reproductive system, but also in the abdominal cavity, lungs, and digestive tract.

Features and causes of endometriosis

The reasons for the development of endometriosis can be very different. They include:

  • heredity;
  • abortion;
  • hormonal disorders;
  • iron deficiency and many others.

The symptoms of endometriosis may vary from woman to woman. In many ways, they depend on the location of the pathology. Often, symptoms can be expressed by pain, menstrual irregularities, spontaneous spotting in the middle of the cycle, drowsiness, frequent fatigue.

Endometriosis is not a factor in complete infertility, but it strongly affects a woman’s quality of life. It can develop at different rates and severity. Often this disease occurs in women of childbearing age. It is very important to identify this pathology at an early stage, as it can cause infertility and pose a general threat to women’s health in general.

Endometriosis classification and treatment

Endometriosis can be detected by ultrasound of the pelvic organs. In addition, diagnostic methods such as MRI, CT, hysteroscopy can be prescribed.

There are two groups of endometriosis:

  1. Internal genital, i.e. endometriosis of the body and cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes.
  2. External, i.e. endometriosis of the vagina, navel, intestines, perineum and pelvic organs.

Treatment of this disease is prescribed strictly on an individual basis. Typically, treatment begins with hormonal medications. The second treatment option is surgical.

Is it possible to get pregnant with endometriosis?

A woman with endometriosis is likely to get pregnant, but not in all cases. The chances of getting pregnant depend on the severity of the condition. Violation of ovulation, inflammation, adhesions, all this is the cause of infertility in endometriosis.

As statistics show, more than half of patients with endometriosis diagnosis can become pregnant and give birth to a healthy child. Often, it is pregnancy that is an effective way to cure endometriosis. However, it is important to remember the risk factors during pregnancy against the background of this gynecological disease. These factors include ectopic pregnancy, uterine rupture.

The supervision of an experienced gynecologist is a prerequisite for women diagnosed with endometriosis.
